Prior to Qingdao's liberation by CCP’s Peoples Liberation Army in 1949, Chiang Kai-shek had a residence near Beach Number Two. In July 1957, long before the cultural revolution, Mao Zedong along with his wife Jiang Qing and two children visited Qingdao Bathing Beach Number Two. During his frequent visits to Qingdao that year, Mao Zedong and his closest political advisers, along with with local provincial and municipal Party secretaries, discussed the future of the nation.
