Sometimes referred to as Asia’s Oktoberfest, festivities usually begin the second weekend in August with a Grand Opening Ceremony on Saturday, preceded by an Opening Ceremony Concert on Friday night. It concludes with a “Cheers to the World” (GānBēi 干杯) and Closing Ceremony.
If you intend on making it a family event, go early in the morning or get there in the late afternoon and leave before dark to go enjoy the sunset at Shilaoren Beach. The Qingdao International Beer Festival (青岛国际啤酒节) “real” party starts after the sun goes down, with heavy drinking, dancing, and the inevitable … drunken participants.
While the 200+ year old Munich Oktoberfest primarily focuses on local breweries, the Qingdao International Beer Festival (青岛国际啤酒节) is open to both Chinese and foreign brew masters. Since its inauguration, more than 200 beer brands from all over the world have successfully participated. The Beer Fest lasts for 16 days with themed events in an amusement park setting located at TsingTao Beer Passion Square (Century Plaza) in Qingdao’s Laoshan District accross from the convention center. Qingdao is the largest beer production base in China and the Beer Festival provides a great opportunity to show-off the city's distinctiveness.
Qingdao Beer Festival History:
The festival began as the celebration of Qingdao’s 100th Birthday in 1991. Over the years it has changed location several times and evolved to become Asia’s largest beer festival. The original celebrations were held at ZhongShan Park and over the years subsequently held at HuiQuan Square across from ZhongShan Park, Qingdao International Beer City, Century Plaza (崂山区世纪广场-青岛), and now WanRen Square (万人广场) at Golden Sands Beach (金沙滩).
2016 Qingdao International Beer Festival (第26届青岛国际啤酒节2016):
The Asian Oktoberfest is scheduled to start July 29th, 2016 with an opening ceremony at Golden Sands Beach WanRen Square (万人广场) in Huangdao District. On August 6th, the festivities continue with the opening of a new venue at the Qingdao International Horticulture Expo Center. On August 13th, festivities begin at Century Plaza (崂山区世纪广场-青岛) in Laoshan District. The traditional “Qingdao 'GānBēi' with the World (青岛和世界干杯)” closes the festivities on the last Saturday of the event.
